FUSATSU: Beginning on November 10, 2007 once a month on a Saturday or Sunday morning at 8am (see the calendar), we will perform Fusatsu, the Ceremony of Renewing the Observances. Fusatsu is an ancient Buddhist chanting and bowing ceremony of atonement and purification, a retaking of the Rules of Discipline. of what must cease and what must be done, and primarily a return to at-one-of what must cease and what must be done, and primarily a return to at-one-ment. ment.
After our atonement, we invoke the presence of all Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and Ancestors and call up their wisdom and compassion. The Priest leading the service blesses the wisdom water and purifies the room by sprinkling it around the perimeter. Then we retake the Zen Peacemakers Observances together. The Ino (chant leader) reads each Observance and asks the sangha if they will “receive and maintain it.” The sangha replies, “Yes, I will” after each one. Then we do one full bow for each Observance. Then the Priest presiding over the ceremony may give a talk on some aspect of the Observances or on a related topic, or one of Dogen Zenji’s essays on the precepts may be read. Finally, we chant the Four Bodhisattva Vows. The ceremony ends with everyone doing three full bows.
